Beyond the Stories!
Utilising existing socio-cultural networks, we share not just the struggles but also the triumphs of women in extractive communities while pushing for inclusion and fiscal & social justice.
SITEI-Woman
The SITEI-Woman initiative was launched to tactfully question and reverse norms that have culturally and systematically hampered women’s progress, with especial focus on equity, inclusion, justice and gender-based violence in host communities in Nigeria.
In many countries, women have been largely excluded from the growth and the development opportunities given by extractive industries in communities, while being at the same time disproportionately vulnerable to many of the risks associated with them.
It is a truism that while the extractive industries hold promises for host communities’ progress, they pose more risk than opportunity for women and girls, especially during this COVID-19 pandemic, with increased risk for gender-based violence and World Bank statistics pegging the percentage of women who have suffered gender-based violence at a conservative one out of five.
Docudrama
For a world in which 35% of women have experienced either physical and/or sexual intimate partner violence or non-partner sexual violence, 7% of women have been sexually assaulted by someone other than a partner and as many as 38% of murders of women are committed by an intimate partner, it is shocking that in Nigeria, documentary evidence of this oppression is absent. In the extractives, especially in small-scale mining, where women are adversely impacted by inefficient and poor processing techniques, while there are anecdotal and academic narratives of these effects on the very poor and vulnerable women who operate at the bottom of the cadre, there is hardly visual representation.
The docudrama is a fusion of real-life scenarios and some re-enaction aimed at creating awareness on the plight and challenges of women in the extractives. The documentary also features success stories of outstanding women in the sectors and provides possible solutions to the challenges faced by women in mining.
Things Dey Happen Radio Drama
15-minute 13-part family centred drama series creating awareness on ways to curb gender discrimination and gender-based violence and human rights challenges that women encounter in oil and gas and mining communities.
The radio drama, aired in Pidgin and currently airing in Hausa (Yoruba coming soon), aims to educate women and men – and other gate-keepers of patriarchy – on ways to curb gender discrimination and gender-based violence.
Trainings
Identify and train select government, community, company, civil society and media personnel on UN and other certified trainings on women security, gender-based violence and human rights best practices.
The training aims to enlighten and educate companies so that they take intentional steps towards adopting policies that respect human rights.
